Kevin Laman

After more than a decade in the financial services industry, Kevin Laman founded Lattice Wealth Advisors in 2019 to provide thoughtful, client-centered financial guidance.

Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Kevin earned both his undergraduate and MBA degrees from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He later became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, offering comprehensive planning and investment management services.

In 2023, Kevin returned to Knoxville with his wife, Amy, and their three young children. Amy teaches 4th grade at Christian Academy of Knoxville. He continues to serve clients through his office in Chattanooga while living in his hometown. The Laman family are members of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. After decades of playing tennis, Kevin now enjoys spending his free time on the pickleball court.

Financial Independence Planning

While people may or may not want to retire at a certain age, we have found the concept of being financially independent of work is very helpful. Knowing that financial needs are met can give freedom to continue working part-time, full-time, changing jobs, or quitting altogether in order to have time to pursue interests outside of work.

Insurance Analysis & Assessment

The main motivation behind purchasing insurance is to avoid catastrophic financial loss. We evaluate and recommend policy type, structure, and cost in regard to life, disability, and long term care insurance.

Investment Management

While most advisors will only advise on investment accounts under their management, we advise on ALL financial assets for our clients, whether that’s a 401(k) with their current employer, Roth IRA, 529 College Funds, rental real estate, etc. Having a strong grasp of history is key. All investors are at risk of making behavioral mistakes such as “Recency Bias”, which is the tendency to place too much emphasis on recent events rather than those occurring in the more distant past. Diversification leads to better outcomes. We look for certain characteristics in the asset managers we choose. They must have their personal and family money invested in their fund. We look for low fees versus their peer group, We prefer low turnover, meaning they tend to buy and hold businesses for several years rather than trading them often, which can lead to higher costs and taxes. We like to see a company culture and compensation structure that fosters a long-term orientation.

Tax Strategy

Is it better to fund a Roth 401(k) or traditional 401(k)? Which is the best account to invest money for college? Are you aware the “backdoor Roth IRA” contributions? What about the “backdoor Supercharged Roth IRA”? Lifetime tax minimization. We pour over tax returns for clients in order to arrive at a specific tax strategy to minimize their lifetime tax bills. We help weigh the frequent tradeoffs between tax savings and liquidity. We assist in weighing business spending decisions while keeping in mind the enormous benefit of the new Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction for small business owners.

Cash Flow Guidance

Have you ever taken the time to create a budget? How long were you able to follow it? We have found that many budgets get blow up because of “unexpected expenses” or cease to be implemented because they are too tedious or time consuming. Having a spending plan is the base for all financial planning. We use a consistent process to help clients develop a simple, clear, and efficient way to manage their weekly, monthly and annual bills while not requiring them to write down every expense. How do you budget on an irregular income? How do you create a spending plan when you do not know what your income will be for the month, quarter, or year? This is an area where the lessons learned in behavioral finance play a very important role in helping craft a solution.

College Planning

We help clients figure out how to best pay for college for their children. This could be through a number of college specific account options, monthly cash flow, retirement accounts, or a combination of all of these options. Each account type comes with its own set of tax advantages and withdrawal restrictions; therefore, it takes a nuanced approach to arrive at a solution that makes the most sense in the given situation.

Estate Planning

What would happen to your small business if you were to die before selling? Do you have a succession plan or a buy/sell agreement? Do you have a will, durable power of attorney, or healthcare directives? If so, do they reflect your current wishes. How are your investment accounts titled? Were you aware that beneficiary designations on your investment accounts supersede your will? We collaborate with your attorney, as needed, to coordinate your financial life and investments with your estate plan.
